Can I have more than 100 variants, or more than three options?

Shopify now allows 2,048 variants per product, but still only three options. Here is what that means, and when splitting products into separate listings is still the better approach.

Shopify raised the variant limit to 2,048 per product in October 2025, on every plan. If you ran into the old 100-variant cap, that constraint is gone — you no longer need a workaround for variant count alone.

Three limits do still apply, and they are the reasons merchants split products today.

Three options per product

Shopify allows a maximum of three option types on a single product. A bed available in color, size, material and length is four — Shopify will not let you build it as one product, however many variants you have room for.

250 media items per product

Each product can hold at most 250 images, videos and 3D models combined. A product with 2,000 variants cannot show a distinct photo for each one, so for catalogs with heavy per-color photography this, not the variant count, is the real ceiling.

Each variant shares one URL

Every variant of a product lives on the same product page. If you want each color to have its own URL, its own page title and description, and its own card on collection pages, variants cannot give you that — separate products can.

When splitting is still the right answer

If any of the above applies, SA Variants: Combined Listings splits a product's variants into separate product listings and keeps them grouped.

Take a bed in five colors, five sizes and fifteen materials — three options, 375 variants, which Shopify now permits as a single product.

1. Split by color. SA Variants creates five separate products, in draft so you can review them before they go live:

  • Product 1: Bed - Navy Blue

  • Product 2: Bed - Dark Brown

  • Product 3: Bed - Beige

  • Product 4: Bed - Gray

  • Product 5: Bed - White

One product split into five separate colour listings in draft

2. They stay grouped. The five products show as a single swatch row, so a shopper picks a color and moves between the listings while still choosing size and material on each.

Separate product listings shown together as one swatch row

Each listing now has its own URL, its own SEO, its own 250-image allowance and its own three option slots — which is how splitting also gets you past the three-option limit.

Separate listings, without the clunk. Each color keeps its own page and URL, which is what makes it indexable — but shoppers do not pay for that with a page reload. SA Variants updates the product content on the page as they click between swatches.

SA Variants has a 30-day free trial, and it is free on Shopify Partner development stores.
