By default, Shopify themes display all product images in the gallery regardless of which variant a customer has selected. If a customer picks Red, they still see images for every other color alongside it. Variant Image Automator fixes this by filtering the gallery to show only the images that belong to the selected variant, creating a clean, focused, and professional shopping experience.

Allows multiple images per variant

Shopify natively only allows one image to be assigned to each variant. Variant Image Automator removes this limitation by letting you group multiple images under each variant and displaying all of them in the gallery when that variant is selected.

Works on featured product sections across all pages

The variant-specific image filtering works not just on the product page but also on featured product sections on any page — including the home page, landing pages, and any other page where a featured product section is displayed.

Displays common images with every variant

You can set up common media — images that are not specific to any one variant, such as size charts, lifestyle shots, or packaging images — and have them appear alongside every variant's gallery automatically.

Controls what is displayed before a variant is selected

When a customer first lands on a product page without a specific variant pre-selected, you can control what they see in the gallery. Available options are:

Supports videos and 3D models
The app works with all types of Shopify media, not just images. Videos and 3D models are filtered and displayed the same way as images, so your full media gallery stays variant-specific regardless of the media type.

Works across multiple themes simultaneously

You can run the app on more than one theme at the same time. This is particularly useful if you are testing a new theme while your current theme is still live — the app can be active on both without any conflict.

No code changes required

The app is completely plug-and-play. You do not need to edit any theme code or touch any files to get it working. Everything is managed through the app dashboard and the Shopify theme editor, keeping your theme clean and untouched. Your store's theme is auto-detected when you enable the app embed.

Retains your theme's original gallery experience

The app works within your existing gallery without altering its structure, design, or feel. Your gallery looks and behaves exactly as your theme intended — the same layout, the same interactions, the same brand experience. The only difference is that customers now see only the images relevant to the variant they have selected. This means you get cleaner variant filtering without compromising the gallery your brand was built around.

Simple and visual dashboard

The app comes with an easy-to-use dashboard where you can drag and drop images into variant buckets, set up common media, and enable the app per product — all without touching any code.

It does not display variant swatches or replace the variant picker

Variant Image Automator only controls what appears in the image gallery. It does not add color swatches, image swatches, or any other type of variant selector to your product page. If you are looking for a variant picker or swatch display, that is a separate app — Swatch King by StarApps is built exactly for that purpose.

It does not support AI-generated themes or galleries

The app is not compatible with AI-built themes or AI-generated gallery layouts. If your store uses an AI-generated theme or a highly customized gallery built with AI tools, the app will not be able to support it.

It does not change the gallery layout or behaviour

The app works within your existing gallery — it does not modify the layout, structure, or functionality of your gallery in any way. Features like zoom, lazy loading, sliders, lightboxes, and any other gallery behaviour provided by your theme remain exactly as they are. The app only controls which images are shown, not how the gallery looks or works.

It does not add custom text or overlays on images

The app does not provide any functionality to add custom text, badges, labels, or any other overlays directly onto product images in the gallery.

It does not add or replace images in your Shopify product media

The app works with the images already in your Shopify product media. It does not upload, edit, generate, or replace product images — it only controls how existing images are displayed based on the selected variant.
