Welcome to Variant Descriptions King! This app helps you do two powerful things with your product descriptions:
Organize long descriptions into clean, collapsible accordions or tabbed sections — making your product pages easier to read and more professional.
Display variant-specific descriptions that change automatically when a customer selects a different variant — so customers always see the most relevant information for what they are looking at.
Both of these features work by formatting your product description in a specific way directly in the Shopify product editor. The app reads your formatted description and displays it on the storefront accordingly — no complex setup required inside the app itself.
Setup guide
Getting the app live takes four steps.
Step 1 — Organize product descriptions
Make your long product descriptions easier to read by formatting them into tabs or collapsible accordions.
To create accordions or tabs, you simply format the section headings in your product description using any heading tag from H1 to H6. The app will detect these headings and automatically convert each section into a tab or accordion on the storefront. You will also need to select the matching heading format in the App settings so the app knows which heading level to look for.
A tutorial video is available to walk you through how this works in practice.
Step 2 — Add variant-specific descriptions
Write descriptions that change based on the selected variant. When a customer selects a variant, the app automatically shows only the description content relevant to that variant.
Variant-specific descriptions are written directly in the product description editor using a simple hashtag-based format. Here are the key rules:
To target a specific variant, add a variant hashtag at the beginning of the section. For example, add
#Redbefore a section to display it only when the Red variant is selectedTo display a section for all variants, use
#Allat the start of the sectionTo target multiple variant options together, use a hyphen to combine them. For example,
#MensTshirt-Greenwill show the section only when both "Men's T-Shirt" and "Green" are selectedTo make a section visible for multiple variants, add multiple hashtags at the beginning. For example,
#Red #Bluewill show the section for both Red and Blue variantsWhen formatting hashtags, remove spaces, punctuation, and special characters from the option name. For example, "Men's T-shirt" should be written as
#MensTshirtVariant hashtags are not case-sensitive, but using CamelCase such as
#MensTshirtinstead of#menstshirtis recommended for better readability
For stores selling in multiple languages: Variant-specific descriptions need to be translated manually. Use Shopify's Translate & Adapt app to translate the description, and make sure the variant hashtags in the translated description match the translated option names and values. For example, if "Red" is translated to "Rojo" in Spanish, the hashtag in the Spanish description should be #Rojo.
Step 3 — Set heading format for tabs and variants
Select the heading tag — from H1 to H6 — that matches the heading format you have used in your product descriptions. The app uses this setting to identify where each tab, accordion, or variant section begins in the description.
Make sure the heading format you select here matches exactly what you have used in your product descriptions. If they do not match, the app will not be able to organize your content correctly.
A tutorial video is available on this step to help you get it right.
Step 4 — Activate the app
Add the app embed to your Shopify theme to enable the app on your storefront. Click Select theme to open the theme management page, where you will see all themes installed on your store divided into published and unpublished themes.
Click Manage app embed next to the theme you want to activate the app on, then toggle the app embed on in the Shopify theme editor.
You can activate the app on your published theme to go live immediately, or enable it on an unpublished theme first to verify everything looks correct before going live.
Note: The app embed must be active on your published theme for the accordions, tabs, and variant descriptions to appear on your live storefront. Always check the embed status after switching or updating your theme, as it may need to be re-enabled on a newly activated theme.
